Welcome to the Burning Issues Book Club!
This book club has been formed to help facilitate our education on important topics facing humanity. Humans have historically been (and continue to be) horrible to each other, to our home, and to the other organisms that share this planet with us. We know things need to change, but many people aren’t sure where to start. This book club is a place for learning and personal growth within a safe online community to help us navigate and implement positive social change in the real world.
Each month, we’ll read and discuss one book. The book list will always be chosen and made public at least 6 months in advance to ensure those borrowing from public libraries have ample time to request and wait for popular books to become available. You're welcome to read ahead, but please wait until the assigned month before discussing it with the group.
We’re doing our best to ensure the books chosen are available in multiple formats (analog, digital, and audiobook formats); since we know not everyone likes to consume materials in the same way.
On the first day of each month, general discussion questions will be posted, but you are encouraged to post your own threads with questions, thoughts, or supplemental materials. There are 3 options of platforms for you to join and participate through:
Please head to one (or more) of the groups and comment on the introduction post. In general, you can participate as much or as little as you want to. And there’s no need to feel guilty if you miss a book (we all know life gets crazy).
At the end of the month, I will compile some of the general takeaways from each forum, and publish them into a blog here for continued dialogue. If you’d like to continue to discuss a work beyond the month it was assigned, please keep the discussion within those blog comments.

Some general rules for participation:
- You don't need to always agree, but keep discussions civil. Racism, homophobia, ableism, and etc. towards other members of the group will not be tolerated. No tone policing POC or talking over anyone else who is trying to share their lived experience. Diversity is important, and we want anyone with a different experience to feel heard and safe when they decide to share their knowledge in our community.
- We're all here to make progress. You don't need to be perfect, but you must be open-minded. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Growth can be challenging especially when confronting our internal biases and harsh realities of the world.
- No selling or self-promotion. The exception is if you wrote a book you'd like to add to our reading list and please (DM mods before posting for approval).
- Feel free to share supplementing articles, podcasts, or youtube videos, but keep it on topic for the sake of discussion!
